OPtiarc AD-7241S Sometimes produces write errors

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I recently added an Optiarc AD-7241S SATA Dual_Layer burner to my new(er) PC and have found two or three times that when burning a CD or DVD, CDBurnerXP reports that the drive has experienced a write error "probably due to bad media" yet the media that I use (Verbatim CD's and Ridisc DVDs) have never given me trouble using my previous Pioneer drives in my old PC. When a write error happens, I find that if I put the same CD back in the burner I can still write to the CD so it hasn't actually produced a coaster. I've also used the drive with ImgBurn to burn ISO images of some DVDs and did see that when starting to write the leadin, it seems to fail on the first attempt and then happily retries and works fine as if the drive isn't coming ready at the first attempt. The PC also has a Liteon Model: DVDRW SHW-16H5S IDE drive that was in the PC when I bought it and so far I've not seen any issues with that drive. The Optiarc drive is only 3 weeks old and is running Firmware Version 1.03 so I wondered if anyone else has experienced any issues with this drive and whether I need to look at flashing the firmware if there is a newer version available?

Any help gratefully received.
