Launched CDBurnerXP, it REINSTALLED itself!

Recommended Posts

Per title, what exactly just happened? I burned a DVD about an hour ago and shut down CDBurnerXP. About 15 minutes ago I was preparing to burn another disc and launched CDBXP again, but it launched some setup program and REINSTALLED CDBurnerXP! I terminated the installer promptly and relaunched CDBXP again and again it installed something, but this time CDBXP launched afterwards normally. However, I don't trust it anymore.

I checked Programs and Features (I'm using windows 7) and it says CDBurnerXP has been installed today (Sept. 1 2011) but I've been using it for months and I've never seen anything like this!

So what happened? I uninstalled CDBXP minutes ago and I'm preparing to reinstall my system, I think I've been hacked or something.

(I can't search, the search does not allow me to go to any other page than the first, I'm assuming it's broken.)

I'm assuming the worst then. That is, CDBurnerXP is infected some way and it installed something on my machine. I did download it from the official site, but I'm done with it.

Time for DBAN.

I have a suggestion here. That is that an auto update should advise the user and pause for permission before beginning the update.

This past May, as posted in this forum, after loading CDBXP, I looked up to my screen to see some sort of install going on and, being ever cautious regarding viruses and other threats - and not knowing what the install was about - aborted the process as quickly as I could.

That led to CDBXP problems where I could no longer burn audio CDs. The problem was eventually resolved with a reinstall. But, IMHO, to safeguard the integrity of a user's system, as well as to eliminate the confusion noted in this post, no update should ever install without notice and permission.
