Can not burn created mdf+mds files with error: burn method not supported

Recommended Posts

I downloaded and installed latest CDBurnerXP today. Then I used it to create images(mdf+mds) of DVD video discs for backup. These DVD video discs have no protection.

Now I want to burn these images, but when I chose burn ISO images and pick the image up, it stopped with error: "The currently selected burning method is not supported by the drive 'G: ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U'. Please select another burning method for burning the disc.".

I rechecked the Burn ISO image dialog, there are only "Choose automatically" and "Track at Once" is the Burn method drop down list.

After multiple expirements, I found that if I put an empty disc (I use RiTEK DVD-R 8x) into the drive then open CDBurnerXP, only "Track at Once" is checked.

But if no disc is inside the recorder before CDBurnerXP start, all features is checked, even if I put the disc into the recorder and reopen the Device Information window.

Is it a bug?

OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

CDBurnerXP Version: 4.5.4.5306

Hm, this seems to be a bug in StarBurn. I checked what happens internally, and even though SAO is selected automatically (if you leave the option "choose automatically") and SAO is according to their docs the only allowed write mode for MDS images, outputs the error "The SAO mode only is allowed for burning MDS!". This seems incorrect. Will ask them to fix.

According to StarBurn, MDS images can not be used for burning DVDs. They are only meant for emulation purposes. I will probably remove the burning capability in future versions to avoid any cunfusion.

A little more detail on the issue: MDS images need to be burned using Session at once mode, this mode is not available for DVD type discs. This is why burning MDS to CD works fine, but burning to DVD does not. The recorder information window shown initially actually shows the supported burning modes when a disc is inserted, so this part is working as expected.

So basically I need to limit burning MDS to CD type media.
