command line syntax

Recommended Posts

I beat my head for a day trying to get the command line program to write to a specified file without success -- until I happened to try in desperation to include the square brackets -- [ ] -- in the command. :o I had thought that the documentation was using those in the [nearly!] universal indication of optional parts of the syntax!

Since it is not likely that the syntax can be changed at this time, the document should clearly note that the square brackets are to be taken literally and not as indication of optional parts of the syntax!

It's still not clear, I think.

Parts in [] brackets are not optional.

Better would be something like:

The square brackets -- [ ] -- are part of the command, not indicating something optional.
