Trouble with "tsstcorp cddvdw ts l633a"

Hi all, I recently upgraded a friend's Dell laptop from Windows Vista to Win 7.

All went fine, apart from the DVD-writer ending up funky. At first, it wasn't to be found at all on the system, some conflict or other. I googled a bit on the subject and finally got the drive visible in Windows by adjusting the filters in regedit.

However.. and this is strange. Whenever I insert a DVD, empty or not, I can see no files on it. All it says is either "XXX MB left on disc" or "disc is full". It's like the unit is set on "write mode" only. Never experienced this before on any other system.

The drive in question is a "tsstcorp cddvdw ts l633a".

Any ideas? Help much appreciated!
